Tablet PCs
A tablet PC is all about portability. It’s meant to allow any kind of user to get the best out of a notebook with no keyboard required. Any kind of tablet PC is equipped at least with WiFi and some with 3G capabilities, which increases its portability and makes it perfect for working, reading or just having fun on the go. Most of the models also include Bluetooth modules that allow connectivity with peripherals as well as fast peer to peer data transfer.
Apps market
Either based on Windows platforms, Android, Linux or IOS, all the tablet PCs are application-oriented devices. Applications can be proprietary or open source, and depending on this may be distributed freely or charged. Since manufacturers provide Software Development Kits (SDKs) for their respective platform, it becomes simple for anyone with basic programming knowledge to build their own application.
Apps have created a market both on the development and distribution side, opening doors for further service channels to advertisement media; a win-win situation for developers and publishers independently of the selected platform
Possible applications
A tablet PC has a broad range of possible applications: a replacement to computers in very specific scenarios, such as meetings or presentations; as an e reader which great resolution and access to eBooks stores; a production platform enhancer; a control device; or as an advertising medium.
Tablet PCs provide the feeling of having an actual product that is customized with each app in your hands, either if its a huge library where any book can be accessed, a gaming platform, a remote control for appliances at home, an over sized calling station, or just as an Internet browser, the mix of power and portability make it ideal for personal and professional use.
A tablet PC can be deployed in several industrial ways; which might require customization of the enclosure, selection of the right LCD for reading conditions, procuring of the right touch panel— either resistive for more robustness and low cost, or capacitive for better reaction and interaction.
Hardware Platform Customization
Although a wide range of tablet PCs is available in the market, manufacturers would most likely only provide the related SDKs and operation instructions. When it comes to low cost hardware, most tablets will be based on Linux or Android, with almost no support for developers or retailers, having all the customization available only at software level.
Software Services approach.
More and more hardware is becoming just a means or channel for the product to reach the client, while the software on top of it is the actual selling service where the revenue might come from.
Hardware platforms are quite standard since the firmware stack is almost the same. Firmware must be compiled in order to be able to control the selected Hardware. On top of it, an SDK can be used in order to code the final application. This allows the unit to be custom configured to client’s needs, and use the same hardware for a phone, a portable media player, mobile Internet device, eBook reader, etc.

Once a service application is included on top of it, the actual profit comes from selling the applications or having monthly fees for the service, ensuring the initial investment is covered within 6 to 12 months.
